A Groundbreaking Event
“Today we are making history,” stated John Oliver, HHS President & CEO. “This is a huge project in size, scope and impact which will provide incredible benefits to our patients, staff and community - all coming together to support HHS’ mission of providing quality, compassionate care and services to meet the diverse needs of our population.”
The New Oakville Hospital will replace the Oakville -Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH), which has been in existence for over 60 years, and currently has no more room for expansion. This new state-of-the-art hospital which is being built in the northern part of Oakville, will be over three times the size of OTMH, and, offer a full range of acute healthcare services including:
adult mental health;
cancer clinic;
child and adolescent mental health;
complex continuing care;
critical care;
emergency;
maternal child care;
medical/surgical;
rehabilitation; and
renal dialysis.
Judy Wilson, HHS Board Vice Chair, expressed, “I am so pleased to be here to witness what has already transpired on the site through the early works initiatives. There are visible signs that the healthcare landscape for our community has already begun to see considerable change. This project promises a greatly improved future for community hospital care in Oakville.”
“During this time of planning and designing a new healthcare facility for our community, the Foundation, its board, and senior leadership volunteers have embarked on a $60 million fundraising campaign to equip our remarkable new hospital,” explained Bill Cooper, Oakville Hospital Foundation Campaign Co -Chair. “Until that day when we open the doors of our new hospital, there is a lot of construction to be done and a lot of funds that need to be raised. Today marks the beginning of our hospital but it is up to us to complete the picture. Support from the great people of this community will enable us to equip this innovative centre of medical excellence and ensure we all receive the best possible care closer to home.”
“Together, we are embarking on a new era of hospital care in Oakville and the region and are looking forward to opening the doors to this new hospital in 2015,” said Mr. Oliver. “The expanded family -focused areas and user-friendly architectural design will align with the superb clinical care delivered at the hospital. Thank you to the provincial government and the Town of Oakville for making this amazing investment in the health of our community.”
Construction on the New Oakville Hospital is expected be completed in 2015. The hospital project is a significant economic opportunity for suppliers and contractors in Halton Region and the Greater Toronto Area. At the peak of construction, Hospital Infrastructure Partners (HIP) estimates more than 1,100 workers on site daily.
HIP is the successful bidder who will design, build, finance and maintain our new hospital. The value of the contract with HIP in today’s dollars is approximately $2 billion. The contract cost covers the design and construction of the facility, building maintenance, life -cycle repair and renewal, as well as project financing.
Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long -Term Care are working with HHS to develop the new replacement hospital, which will remain publicly owned and publicly controlled.
Once completed, the New Oakville Hospital will be one of the largest community hospitals in Ontario.
