Q: Why does Oakville need a new hospital?
A: Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital has no capacity to grow or change. To effectively respond to future developments in medical practice and community expectations for convenient, timely care would require a larger, more modern facility. An infrastructure that is more than 60 years old and the lack of available land to expand on the existing site are significant factors in the decision to relocate. Patient room size and the ability to incorporate new technology and new services in limited space has also contributed to the decision.
There have been numerous studies conducted that support the expansion and relocation of the Hospital. Among them is the January 2003, Halton-Peel District Health Council report entitled “A Regional Hospital Infrastructure Plan for Halton and Peel” that strongly recommended "a new replacement hospital in north Oakville to accommodate the high rate of growth and to replace the lack of capacity and poorer, aging infrastructure at the existing site.”
Q: When will the current Hospital close?
A: The Hospital will close once the transfer of all patients and services to the new site has been completed.
Q: What will happen to the current Hospital after the hospital closes?
A: The existing property, which includes the available Oakville Trafalgar High School lands, is part of a town-initiated community visioning exercise to define the site's specific development opportunities in accordance with the policies set out in the Livable Oakville Plan. A visioning workshop was hosted by the Town's Planning Services department in June 2010. The workshop provided an opportunity for members of the public to learn more about the Study - its purpose, scope and process. The input from participants at this visioning workshop will be used to guide the creation of redevelopment concepts. Find out more about the Town's land study at www.oakville.ca.
HHS and the Town are also exploring the potential of town ownership of the site, which will be taken into consideration in the visioning exercise.
Q: Can some services be kept at the Reynolds site and others moved to the new location?
A: All acute care services must be moved to the new location. In addition to the report that was issued by the Halton Peel District Health Council supporting the relocation of all hospital services to a new site, HHS explored a series of options to achieve the level of service that will be required to serve our community well into the future. Dividing acute care services between two sites in our community would result in the duplication of efforts and inefficient use of valuable resources, including our staff and physicians.
Q: Will equipment be transferred to the new site?
A: Equipment is an integral part of the planning process for the New Oakville Hospital. A detailed inventory of all equipment and furniture within the existing hospital has been compiled as well as a list of new equipment and furniture that will be necessary for the new Hospital. Equipment and furniture that can be used at the new Hospital will be moved. Additionally, purchases of equipment and furniture made before the move to the new Hospital will, when possible, be made using the standards and guidelines being developed for the New Oakville Hospital. |
