Introduction
In September 2005, the Government of Ontario announced its investment in our community’s healthcare with the construction of a new hospital in Oakville. The intent was to relocate and expand the existing hospital, which originally opened in 1950, with a new state-of-the-art facility.
Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) immediately set out to begin the planning process for the new hospital.
In November 2006, Bill Bailey joined HHS as the new Vice-President, Redevelopment. A new redevelopment office was established to oversee the planning and development of the New Oakville Hospital as well as other capital projects at HHS hospitals.
With planning and design well underway, the next issue to be addressed was where the new hospital would be located. On March 8, 2007, Kevin Flynn, MPP Oakville, paid a visit to OTMH to announce the government’s intent to transfer 50-acres of land to HHSfor the purpose of building the new hospital. This land was located at the North West corner of Third Line and Dundas Street in Oakville.
On Monday, May 31, 2010, Infrastructure Ontario and Halton Healthcare Services released a request for proposals to three companies short-listed to design, build, finance and maintain the new replacement Oakville Hospital.
On Friday, July 29, 2011, Infrastructure Ontario and Halton Healthcare Services announced Hospital Infrastructure Partners had signed a fixed-price contract to design, build, finance and maintain the new replacement Oakville Hospital. The announcement signified that all contractual steps had been completed and construction could begin.
HHS staff, physicians, volunteers, local officials, and Oakville residents gathered at the site of the New Oakville Hospital at Third Line and Dundas Street on Thursday, September 22, 2011, for a ceremonial groundbreaking event to officially kick off construction of the New Oakville Hospital. |
